Product Description

Performance and Functions: This product is a modified form of asphalt that can be used in both oil-based and water-based drilling fluids. It exhibits excellent wellbore protection and anti-collapse effects, primarily used for reducing high-temperature and high-pressure fluid loss in drilling fluids, improving the quality of mud cakes, and inhibiting shale hydration swelling. It also has a certain ability to reduce frictional resistance.

Application

I. Main Functions of Asphalt in Drilling Fluids

1. Inhibiting Shale Hydration and Stabilizing the Wellbore

Asphalt is hydrophobic, forming a hydrophobic film on the surface of shale and mudstone, reducing water intrusion.

This effectively reduces complex downhole risks such as wellbore collapse and spalling.

2. Sealing Formation Microfractures (HTHP Sealing)

Asphalt softens at high temperatures, flows into microfractures, and then solidifies or adheres, sealing fractures ranging from 0.1 to 10 micrometers in size.

This reduces fluid intrusion, decreasing lost circulation and fluid loss.

3. Reducing Filtration Loss (HTHP)

It forms a flexible, dense filter cake structure, reducing drilling fluid loss to the formation.

It significantly improves HTHP filtration loss.

4. Improving Lubricity and Reducing Torque and Friction

Asphalt contains oily components, which improve the lubricity of drilling fluids and reduce friction between tools and the wellbore.

Especially suitable for high well inclination and long horizontal sections.

5. Improved Temperature Resistance

Modified asphalt (oxidized asphalt, sulfonated asphalt, emulsified asphalt) maintains a stable structure at high temperatures and is suitable for drilling environments of:

150–220°C.

6. Stabilized Emulsion Systems (in OBM/SBM)

It can be used as an auxiliary emulsifier in oil-based drilling fluids to improve system stability.
