Drilling grade bentonite is prepared from montmorillonite-containing nonmetallic minerals through sodium modification and pulverization. It is the fundamental additive for water-based drilling fluids, suitable for use in freshwater and saline drilling fluids with mineralization below 2000 mg/L. It also functions as a fluid-loss reducer, viscosifier, and plugging agent.
