Drilling fluid, commonly known as "mud," is a specially designed circulating fluid used in the process of drilling oil, gas, and water wells. High Viscosity Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC-HV) is a specific grade of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, a water-soluble polymer derived from cellulose, the main structural component of plants.
The "HV" stands for High Viscosity. This means that even at very low concentrations (often 1-2% or less) in water, it forms thick, gel-like solutions or highly viscous suspensions. This property is its defining characteristic and the primary reason for its use.

Applications
1.  Wellbore Stability
Application: The fluid exerts hydrostatic pressure on the formation walls to counteract the inherent pore pressure of the rocks and any tectonic stresses.  This prevents the hole from collapsing.
2.  Transport of Drill Cuttings
Application: As the drill bit grinds rock into fragments (cuttings), the fluid carries them away from the bit and up the annular space (the space between the drill string and the wellbore) to the surface.
3.  Cooling and Lubrication
Application: The drilling process generates immense heat and friction at the drill bit and between the drill string and the wellbore.
4.Formation Pressure Control
Application: This is the most critical safety function. The column of drilling fluid in the wellbore creates a pressure barrier that prevents high-pressure fluids (oil, gas, or water) from unexpectedly flowing into the wellbore and causing a kick, which can lead to a blowout.
